I recently spent 2 hours trying to absorb as much beauty as possible from Joseph Cornell's boxes (in particular The Crystal Cage) at the Vancouver Art Gallery as part of the Surrealist Exhibit. Your Artful Journey has pieced together for me my feelings and layered experiences of feeling I had with his works at the museum. Having to write a response from an early childhood educator's point of view (how we view childhood and the importance of children) with only my notes and memories of what I saw was going to be near impossible, until I found your site. I thank you for having seen his beauty first and giving me the images I need to "re-see" to connect my words and dreams. So much appreciation, Lori Roberts, degree student Capilano University ECE Program

Thank you so much for these descriptions...especially the paul and virginia one. I needed it to conclude my analysis on Joseph Cornell's artworks, for my art project at school...thanks once again.

It's instructive to read how Joseph Cornell was influenced by the factors in his environment that helped shape his aesthetic viewpoint. His Victorian collection especially caught my eye. Thanks for bringing this artist to my attention. -- Pat

What a treat to read and see your "visit" with and about Joseph Cornell. I wasn't very familiar with him, though I'm an fine arts and art history major! Thank you so much for sharing. I'm off tomorrow to the library to learn more... I love the simplicity and sybolism of his "cabinets." There's something about his being "cubby-holed" in his job...sales meaning he might have had to force his personality outward, when he may actually have been an introvert... That misanthropic angst makes for good art, and makes for a sense of having to place it in a box for safe-keeping! I can relate to this push/pull personality, and I'm so delighted to have "met" Cornell and you here at the birth of 2008! Deb
